What is African swine fever?

African swine fever (ASF) is an acute, hemorrhagic and severe infectious disease caused by the infection of domestic swine and various wild boars (African wild boar, European wild boar, etc.) by the African swine fever virus (ASFV). The World Organisation for Animal Health (Original name in French: Office International des Épizooties, OIE) has listed it as a statutory reportable animal disease, which is global priority prevention.

African Swine Fever Virus

ASFV enters the pig’s body through the mouth and upper respiratory tract system. Infection occurs in the nasopharynx or tonsils. The virus quickly spreads to the mandibular lymph nodes and spreads throughout the body through the lymph and blood.

The cells change rapidly during strong virus infection, and the cells have died before showing a significant stimulus-response; during weak virus infection, the stimulus-response is easily observed, the nucleus becomes larger, and mitosis generally occurs.

The morbidity is usually between 40% and 85%, and the mortality varies depending on the infected strain. The mortality of highly pathogenic strains can reach 90-100%; The mortality of moderate pathogenic strains in adult animals is between 20% and 40%, and in young animals, it is between 70% and 80%; The mortality of low pathogenic strains is between 10% and 30%.
